Koskina Castle

Castle Koskina (or Castle of  Nikaria or Castle of Messaria) is located in the village Kosoikia, in the middle of the island. It used to be the strongest fortification of the Byzantine city Dolichi. It was built by the Byzantines on the top of a hill in the 10th century in order to host a small military unit that could oversee the surrounding area and the sea routes. Parts of the wall surrounding the top of the hill can still be seen nowadays. There is also the church of St. George Dorgana, a vaulted basilica, within which you can see columns of ancient buildings.

Ag. Irini Church, Kampos

This is one of the most important post-Byzantine monuments of Ikaria, built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica, parts of which can still be seen today in various places. The church had previously been dated to the 9th-10th c., but a recent reevaluation suggests it is a construction of the 11th-12th century. The church is a four-column cruciform. It is rectangular, with a towering dome. The corner rooms have pitched roofs, while in the east there is an arch. On the west side of the temple there is a narthex.

This is the largest village on the north side of the island. It is rather sparsely populated with traditional houses spread out in a dense forest. The village is known for the particular habits of the residents. For example the shops open late at night or stay open without a shopkeeper! In the summer, the island's visitors enjoy drinks and snacks in the local cafes. On August 6th there is a huge festival on the island, attended by hundreds of people.
