Pyrgi

This medieval village, an architectural jewel of the island, is 25 km from the town of Chios. It is a highly fortified area with stone houses built next to each other, alleys and narrow cobblestone streets and many churches. It is considered a protected monument as it survived the earthquake of 1881 and it is almost unchanged since the day it was built. The high walls of the houses are decorated with geometrical patterns (engraved on the fresh plaster) called "ksysta". This is a technique of Chios which became famous in 1965.

Mesta

This village is quite isolated in relation to the rest of the “Mastichochoria”. It is considered the best preserved medieval village and its fortification is reminiscent of Olympi and Pyrgi. It was included in the map in 1422. Later on, the Genoese intervened drastically in the structure of the village but the dark cobblestone streets, known as vaults, remained unchanged. As a visitor you can wander through the village and enjoy the history the place has to offer. In the past, the enemies were delayed by the labyrinthine streets and the winding paths.
