Panagia Gouverniotisa Monastery

This temple used to be the Katholikon of a monastery. The remains of the monastic cells date back to the 19th century during the Venetian period of Laurentius Maripero in accordance with the Ducal Archive of Handakas (1368). The architectural style is that of a cross on a dome and the western part of the monastery is bigger in length. Based on the interior mural paintings, this monument is believed to have been built in the second half of the 14th century.

Agia Pelagia

Agia Pelagia is located 24 kilometers northwest of Heraklion. It is one of the most popular summer destinations due to the crystal-clear waters, the protected from the wind beach and the facilities found in the area. Near Agia Pelagia you can find other beautiful beaches, too. Some of them are sandy and some of them are pebbly. Among the most well-known are Mononaftis, the Beach of Made,  Ligaria and Palaiokastro.

Voidomatis Beach

This beach is located approximately 80 kilometers from Heraklion in the Southern part of Crete. It is a small bay at the end of an impressive gorge. The beach is encircled by two huge rocks and the view from above will take your breath away! The beach is a combination of sand and pebbles and the turquoise waters are crystal-clear. To reach this paradise you will need to follow the road that starts at Treis Ekklisies (=Three Churches) village on the west. The footpath, 5 kilometers in length, is not easily accessible and rather difficult to traverse.

Limanakia Hersonissos

In Hersonissos you can find quiet beaches to enjoy a tranquil day by the sea but you can also find crowded beaches with lots of people, music and water sports. Limanakia consist of beautiful small beaches which are located west of Hersonissos. They are approximately 28 kilometers east from Heraklion and you can access them easily. Due to their geographical position, they are exposed to strong northern winds but they are still popular with the bathers. The beach west of the port is pebbly and with a rocky seabed, which makes it ideal for snorkeling.

Agiofarago

South of Heraklion and near Matala, you will find Agiofarago. This is an amazing gorge which leads to a magnificent pebbly beach. The beach is also accessible by boat from Kaloi Limenes port and its natural beauty remains unspoiled. The walk through the gorge takes approximately 20 minutes and will reward the hikers with a breathtaking view of the landscape and crystal-clear waters. A day-trip to Agiofarago or camping on the beach is a worthwhile experience if you want to experience the tranquility of nature.

Matala

This is a beautiful sandy beach with caves carved inside the rocks. Although the caves used to be tombs of the Roman era, they were later turned into shelters for the “Flower Children” (aka as Hippies) and became very famous during the 60s. They are very well-known and visited by many people until nowadays even though accommodation in them is no longer allowed. Matala is located south of the prefecture Heraklion, in the valley of Messaras. The waters are crystal-clear and deep but the sea can be a bit wavy at times. The beach is organized with umbrellas, sun beds and a shower area.
