The Mitropoli Church of Aegina

This church, built in 1806, is a three-nave basilica with three red domes, dedicated to three different holy figures: the central nave to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the right to Saint Dionysos who is the patron of Aegina, and the left to Saint John the Theologian.

Among other things, the church was used as a parliament in 1827 and 1828 for the inaugural ceremony of the first government of Greece. It was also used as a meeting place of the Assembly of Elders and for a short period of time covered the needs of mutual learning.

The Monastery of Panagia Chrisoleontissa

The Monastery, located in the center of the island, is the oldest monastery of Aegina. According to local tradition, it was built in the Middle Ages, when the original monastery of the Virgin Mary (in the area Leonti Kypseli) was destroyed by pirates and the monks had to carry the painting of the Virgin in the mountains. The monastery is not visible from the coast of the island. One of the most impressive sights (dating back to 1610) is the tall tower that rises in the center of the monastery and the old wooden carved iconostasis in the katholicon.

It was designed by architects Stamatis Kleanthis and Eduard Schaubert and its construction began in 1830 with a donation by the Swiss philhellene Eynard, thus the name "Eynardeio". It is the first neoclassical building in the country and one of the first public buildings of the Greek State.
