Aliakmon River

The Aliakmon is the longest river in Greece (310 km). The river springs from the mountains Verno (or Grammos) and Voio at the country's borders with Albania and flows through several districts of Macedonia (Kastoria, Grevena, Kozani, Imathia) before it ends up into the Thermaic Gulf. The name is derived from “άλας” = salt sea and “άκμων “= anvil. According to Greek mythology the Aliakmon was one of the river gods, son of Oceanus and Tethys. At the prefecture of Kozani you will find the artificial lake Polyfytos which was created after the construction of the homonymous dam.
