Palaiokastro

On the northwest side of Ios, just 18 km.  from the port, you will find Palaiokastro. This Byzantine castle was built for the surveillance of the sea routes leading to Crete. The view from up there is breathtaking: the endless blue of the Aegean Sea and a clear view of the islands of Naxos, Paros, Amorgos and the Small Cyclades.

Church of Panagia Gremiotissa

The church of Panagia Krimniotissa is in Chora. It is a church of Byzantine architecture and is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

Based on local tradition, the image of the Virgin with Christ which you can see in the church nowadays, was found in the bay of Mylopotas, in the rocks and lit by a candle. The islanders who found it, carried it to the church of the Holy Cross. Miraculously, however, the picture disappeared at night and was found again in the place where they finally built the Church that we can see today; The Church of Panagia Gremniotissa.
