Holy Monastery of Agios Dimitrios (Kipseli)

The monastery of Agios Dimitrios is located 2.5 km. northeast of Kipseli village (aka Tourkopalouko) near Kokytos river.

The church was built by the Despot of Epirus, Michael Doukas, in 1242 as indicated by inscription on the south window of the transverse arch. Side outbuildings (chapels) were also built later on. The wall paintings date back to the 17th-18th century but there is no historical information concerning the monastery.

Castle of Parga

Before the castle was constructed, the residents of Parga always tried to protect their city from the raiders because it was exposed to the sea. They built the first fortifications with the help of the Normans. In 1452 the place was occupied by Hadji Bey but the residents of Parga managed to re-conquer it in 1454. In 1537 Barbarossa demolished the existing fortress and city. The castle was rebuilt with the help of the Venetians, but before its completion it was destroyed again by the Turks.

Ziros Lake

The lake is located two kilometers west of the highway Filippiada – Ioannina, opposite the community of Pantanassa, Arta. Its name has a Slavic origin (Ozero = lake in Russian). In the period of 1950-1955 and on the initiative of Queen Frideriki, elegant buildings that are in harmony with the environment were constructed on the banks of the lake. These buildings served as a Paidoupoli (meaning “a city for children” in Greek) for the care of the orphans of World War II and the Greek Civil War.
