Church of Panagia Chrissopigi

Virgin Chrissopigi is the patron saint of the island. The monastery is built on a spectacular location, perched on a rock that penetrates the sea and separates Faros Bay in two. The whitewashed church was built in 1615 to house the painting of Zoodochos Pigi, which was found by fishermen in the sea.

The celebration of the Ascension is followed by a feast and all the inhabitants of the island celebrate together.

Monastery of Prophet Elias

The monastery of Prophet Elias is located on the top of the tallest mountain of the island (at an altitude of about 700 meters). The monastery was built on the ruins of an ancient citadel and on the right of the monastery you can see the small chapel of St. Elisaios. You can go to the church on foot via a path which offers a stunning view of Sifnos and the nearby islands.

Hiking Trails of Sifnos

The trails, a unique network of about 200 kilometers, were created for the needs of the locals. Few of them date back to the third millennium BC and some of them are paved while others are just dirt roads. If you follow them they will take you to monasteries and chapels, monuments of popular culture such as wells, fountains, pigeon houses, ancient towers, mining ruins, threshing floors, lime-kilns and mills.

Cheronissos

The picturesque and relatively isolated fishing village of Cheronissos is located at the northern end of the island. Here you can find some restaurants, a small grocery store, a few rooms to let and a traditional pottery workshop. On the hill you can see the church of St. George and the remains of an ancient tower.

Castle of Sifnos

The castle is the old capital of the island and the seat of the Archdiocese of Sifnos (6th-19th century). It is one of the most picturesque and beautiful settlements on the island which reached its peak in the 6th century. It has been inhabited from the  prehistoric times (the first inhabitants settled here in the 3rd millennium BC) to the present.

The settlement has an ellipsoidal shape and a defensive character. There are two defense rings of buildings, one built near the other, with mansions in the inner ring and simpler houses in the outer ring.

Vathi Beach

This is one of the most beautiful and largest sandy beaches of the island. It is 10 km. far from Apollonia, the capital. Here you can find rooms to let, restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, etc. On the beach you will also see the beautiful chapel of the Archangels (16th century). A huge festival takes place there three times a year (July, September and November).

Kamares

Kamares village is located 5 km. from Apollonia. It is the port and the largest coastal settlement on the island.

In Kamares there are rooms to let, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, a private camping site, tourist offices, cafes, the Municipal Information Office, the Port Authority, Customs etc.

On the opposite side of Kamares there is the Church of St. Marina and the homonymous village with rooms to let, hotels, grocery stores, restaurants and cafés.

Platys Gialos

Platys Gialos is one of the largest beaches of the island and the most popular choice of the Greek visitors. The beach is awarded a Blue Flag by the European Union annually as it fulfills the 32 strict criteria of the program (cleanliness, organization, quality of the water of the sea, safety, facilities, etc.). In Platys Gialos you will also find apartments, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, a tourist office, cafes, cafe-snack bar and many others.

Fasolou Beach

This sandy beach with the crystal clear waters is located on the left of Faros Beach. In order to get there you can follow the footpath next to the bus stop. The tamarisk trees in the area offer their natural shade on sunny days. Here you can also see the Monastery of Stavros.
