Alpheus River

Alpheus river is 112 km. long and it is the largest river in the Peloponnese. It flows from the Arcadia and on its way, it unites with the streams as Lousios, Elissonas and Tritonas. At Tripotama location it unites with Erymanthos and Ladonas and it thus becomes a very wide river. It passes from the area of ​​ancient Olympia and ends up in the Ionian Sea, south of the Gulf of Kyparissia. Its main tributary is Enipeas (aka Lestinitsa), which also irrigates part of the valley east of Pyrgos.

Foloi

This is a beautiful plateau with oak trees. According to mythology, it takes its name from centaur Pholus, who lived on the plateau and was friend of Hercules. The Centaurs were mythical beings who were half men (from the waist up) and half horses (lower body). The beautiful, dense forest that covers an area of ​​218,000 acres consists mainly of tall oak trees and perennial plane trees. A variety of animals has found shelter in the forest: foxes, jackals, badgers, squirrels, hares and otters.

Kourouta Beach

This is one of the most famous beaches of the prefecture. It is a really beautiful and sandy beach with bars and sunbeds and an intense nightlife. It attracts many tourists in the summer, both Greeks and foreigners, mainly from Germany and Italy. Even if you don’t like the crowds, you should make an exception for Kourouta so that you can enjoy the crystal clear waters.

Andritsaina

This is a famous mountain village with stone houses and narrow streets, traditional cafes under the trees and great views of the neighboring villages of Gortynia. Andritsaina is built amphitheatrically on the eastern slopes of Minthi Mountain and it has an interesting history of various rulers, revolutions and wars. From the early 18th century Andritsaina began to develop and soon became an important commercial and cultural center. The School of the village was founded in 1796 and became the center of spiritual evolution of modern Greece.

Archaeological Museum of Karpathos

The Archaeological Museum of Karpathos is housed in the west wing of the buildings of Eparheio. The exhibition is divided into three sections:

  1. Prehistoric times. It includes Neolithic findings from the Minoan / Mycenaean era.
  2. Historical times. In includes exhibits from the three ancient cities of the island: Karpathos, Arkeseis and Vroukounta.
  3. Byzantine times. It includes representative findings from the basilicas and villages of the island.

Folk Art Museum at Menetes

The Folk Art Museum is housed in a 200 years old cottage in Menetes. It is a two-storey building with a small entrance. The first floor with the black and white mosaic floor, shelters objects of everyday life of the villagers, musical instruments and old pictures. The ground floor houses the ossuary of the village and its conversion into a museum began in 1995. Here you will see  traditional agricultural tools and kitchen utensils.
