Mavri Rahi

Mavri Rahi is the trademark of Psara. It is located on the southern tip of the peninsula of Palaiokastro and is comprised of two churches built as one. They are dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist. During the revolution, the inhabitants placed cannons on Mavri Rahi and turned the place into a fortress. This act went down in history as the 120 defenders decided to sacrifice themselves by blowing the whole place up when they saw that their firght is hopeless. Today, there is a monument in this place to honor the heroes of 1824.

Monastery of the Assumption

The Monastery of Panagia is dedicated to the Assumption. It is located 10 km. far from the city. It is estimated that it was built in 1780. The architect of the church was Roumeliotis who built the church to resemble the monasteries of Mount Athos. When the island was being destroyed, the Turks set the Church on fire to destroy and loot it. However, the monastery was spared temporarily thanks to beehives that the monks threw at the enemy. In the library of the monastery you can see rare manuscripts and books printed in Venice and Moscow.

Church of St. Nicholas

The construction of the church of St. Nicholas, the grand patron of seafarers, started in 1785. The marbles were carried by the habitants from Chios or other Aegean islands, but also from faraway places: Malta and Thessaly. The church is 28 meters long, 14 meters wide and 24 meters high. For the illumination of the church 67 windows and 8 doors were constructed. Nowadays there are 51 and 7 respectively. The church utensils or other high value offerings like the sacred vessels donated by Varvakis, were looted during the destruction of the island in 1824.

Katsouni Beach

Katsouni Beach is located in the village of Psara (eastern side). It is a sandy beach with shallow waters which attracts many visitors.

At the end of the beach you will see Spitalia (residue of the word hospital). It was an old quarantine place where people of Psara had to stay in after they returned from their travels in case an illness manifests. When it was proven that they were healthy, they were allowed to go back to their families. The place currently operates as a cafe - restaurant.

Lazaretta

Lazareta is considered by many as the best beach on the island. It is a sandy beach with shallow waters, located on the south side of the island, in the bay of the port. It is relatively close to the village (about 1 kilometer) and you can go there on foot (about 10 minutes) or by car.

Agkistri Beaches

Skala Beach

Skala is located on the northeast coast of the island and has a natural port where the ferry boats from Piraeus and Aegina are moored.
It is an organized beach, just 100 m. from the port. It attracts a lot of people, mainly families because the sea is shallow and ideal for children.
