Collection of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art of Kythera

The collection is housed in the Byzantine church of Ascension at Livadi. It is a single-room, vaulted temple without mural decoration, granted by the Holy Metropolis of Kythira.

The collection includes samples of artists of the island from the early to late post-Byzantine period, wall paintings of churches of Kythera, fragments of early Christian mosaics, Byzantine icons and silverware objects, metalwork and ceramics.

Hytra or Avgo

This small rocky island is located at a short distance from Kapsali. Here you will see one of the most impressive natural sights of Kythera: The sea cave which will enchant you with the unique colors of the seabed and its playful reflections on the rocky surfaces. Seals find shelter in this cave while Falcons (“Varvakoi”), a rare and protected species, build their nests here. Yellow "Semprevives", the typical local wildflower, blooms throughout the island and makes the landscape even more beautiful.  

You can reach the island by boat from Kapsali or by private yacht.

Mitata

This is the most beautiful and green village of Kythera. It is located north of the island, near the airport. It offers a breathtaking view to a lovely creek, the Gorge of Tsakonas. Across Mitata you can see Viaradika, a smaller village. Between them, at the Gorge of Tsakonas, you will find a beautiful landscape of dense vegetation of various trees, shrubs and other plants. The gorge is accessible and will surprise you with its mills, ponds, abundant water and a small post-Byzantine church.

Kaladi

According to legend, goddess Aphrodite emerged from the crystal clear turquoise waters of this beach. There are two pebbly beaches separated by a big rock and a small cave. Kaladi is located in the eastern part of the island, right next to Palaiopolis. To get to it, you will have to descend 120 stone steps. The beach is not organized but the wonderful waters will definitely compensate you for the effort of the descent and ascent.

Fyri Ammos

This beach is located in the southeast, near the village of Kalamos. It takes its name from the color of the red pebbles and sand. Although a busy place, it is quite far from most villages.

Limnionas

This is a small beach near the monastery of Panagia Mirtidiotissa. You will meet locals here as this is their preferred place when it comes to swimming. It is a quiet beach with a few traditional houses that are used by fishermen and a small tavern where you can taste delicious dishes. From the beach you can see the islands of Panagia in the horizon, while in the north you can find "Fokospilia", which is a cave-shelter for seals.

Palaiopoli

This might be the biggest beach of the island. It is located next to Avlemonas and is easily accessible by asphalt road. It is a beach with sand and pebbles but also rocks for those who like exploring. It is organized, with taverns.

Kakia Lagada

This beach is located at a short distance from Agia Pelagia and the gorge of Kakia. Here you will enjoy the clear waters of the sea. The canteen plays music all day long for those who like to party. This beach is also famous for its beach volley tournaments, the enjoyable Barbarossa days and the pirate skills competitions!
