St. Sophia Cave

The cave is located in a steep area of exceptional beauty, on the west side of Kythera, about 60 meters above sea level. According to tradition, the place was a sanctuary of the nymphs and subsequent worship area in Christian times. The exploration and detailed mapping of the cave was done by speleologist Anna Petrochilou in 1955. The excellent paintings in the antechamber of the cave date back to the 13th century. Among the figures  depicted, you will see Saint Sophia and her three daughters (Agapi, Pisti and Elpida).

Excavations from 1992 to 1994 revealed the "Minoan Peak Sanctuary", a finding of particular importance for the study of the Minoan religion, since the temple is the only monument of its kind that has not been looted. Numerous stone worshiping objects, clay figurines, bronze human statuettes and offerings, jewelry and ceramics have been found in this place.
